SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A surprise birthday party was given on Tuesday night for Mrs. D. Scott, Birdwood Crescent. Tables were set for bridge, the guests bringing beautiful flowers, dainties and gifts.

P rkins, Mrs. R. Hatrick (Wanganui), Mrs. J. Whitnev, Mrs. E. Yates, Mrs. T. Philcox, Mrs. F. Price, Mrs. T. Oliphant, Mrs. Corbett, Mrs. E. Alison, Mrs. A. Abbott, Mrs. Swart, Miss Edna Rhodes, Miss Enid White, Miss Muriel Kingswell.

The officers, N.C.O'e and men of the 18th Medium Battery (60-pounder), New Zealand Artillery, gave a large and brilliant dance at the Regent ballroom last evening, over 150 attending. The guests of honour were Lieut-Colonel Milligan, D.S.O. and Mrs. Milligan. Mr. V. M. Rowland was an efficient secretary. Through the evening many presentations were handed to the men of the different batteries. Pretty girls and pretty gowns predominated at this most successful party.

Mrs. J. P. Donald was hostess at an enjoyable morning tea held at the Tudor Tea Rooms on Tuesday morning, in honour of Mrs. Leslie Thompson, prior to her departure for England. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Herdman, Mrs. A. Fraf-er, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs.. H. R. Bloomfield, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. C. Griffin, Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. E. C. Cutten, Miss Sutton, Miss M. Hunt.

A smart afternoon tea was given by Mrs. Herdman at the Tudor Tea Rooms yesterday afternoon, to Mrs. Leslie Thompson, who left to-day on a trip to England. Mrs. Herdman wore a handsome black accordion-pleated frock with ermine fur and a parma violet hat. Mrs. Thompson was in an ensemble of old rose with rose felt hat to match. Amongst the guests present were: Mrs. H. R. Bloojifield, Mrs. V. R. Meredith, Mrs. Parker Upton, Mrs. J. P. Donald, Mrs. Gilmore, Mrs. Trevor Stringer, Mrs. A. Frater, Mrs. C. Macindoe, Mrs. Tattley, Mrs. McCornfick, Mrs. Swanston, Mrs. Cooper, Mies Hesketh and Miss M. Cameron.

Mrs. C. J. Owen held a delightful bridge party yesterday afternoon at the Lyceum Club rooms. Red, yellow and white poppies were the tea table decorations. The hostess wore an Oriental crepe de chine and rose du barri ensemble suit, fawn hat and osprey; Mrs. Watkins, black cloth suit, black hat with osprey trimmings; Mrs. McMillan, pink georgette, black satin hat; Mrs. Biernacki, brown tweed coat and skirt, brown and gold leather hat; Mrs. Perreau, mole georgette, hat to match; Mrs. C. J. Phillips, beige Oriental sports suit, vintage felt hat; Mrs. P. Herdnian, navy blue and red coat frock, piped with igold; Mrs. Bob Keesing, chartreuse green I crepe de chine suit, hat to match; Mrs. I Burton, nut brown costume, hat with bird of paradise plume; Mrs. Hammond, strawberry coat frock, fawn panne hat; Miss Milligan, royal blue gown, fawn coat and hat of chenille.

A dance, arranged by several young people of the Remuera district, the forerunner of a series of gaieties to be held this season, was held at the Click Clack Cabaret rooms last evening. Mr. Tom Martin, secretary, with the ladies' committee, Misses Clarke, O'Leary, Sinclair, G. Tole, M. Goldwater, N. Martin, V. Snedden, D. Smith and E. Brodie, were responsible for making this dance one of the brightest and best attended this season. Over 2.30 guests were present. The chaperons were Mesdames 11. Wright, T. Kuxton and D. A. Tole. The annual meeting of the Mount Albert Croquet Club was held in their on June 8, when Mrs. Hodgson, the president, presided over a large gathering of members and presented the trophies to the following winners: — A championship, Mrs. Maxwell; B championship, Miss Thomson; championship doubles, Mesdames Finch and Robertson; handicap doubles, Mrs. Finch and Miss Thomson; progressive for season, A, Mrs. Forsyth; B, Mrs. Sharp. The president introduced Major Gordon, who delivered an address on her work. The major made a special plea to mothers to make home-life happy and thus endeavour to keep young people at home.
