WHOLESALE FORGERY.
YOUNG CANADIAN CHARGED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, Wednesday.
Seventeen charges of false pretences were preferred against Douglas Charles Hopewell, a young Canadian, who, it is alleged, has been passing valueless cheques in various parts of the Dominion during the past 12 months. The amount involved in the charges totals £70, but other offences are alleged to have been committed in Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch. Accused's counsel said his client was the son of a Canadian judge, and had a distinguished war record, but he was a drug addict. Hopewell was remanded for a report by the probation officer.
