HOSIERY MILL BURNED.

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE,

RECONSTRUCTION DECIDED ON.

MASTERTON, Wednesday.

The Masterton Spinning and Hosiery Mills were gutted by a fire which was first noticed at midnight last night. The lighter portion of the roof collapsed, and although the brigade aoon bad the fire under control, the machinery and materials were severely damaged.

An adjoining building, Mr. G. Sundorland'e fibrous plaster factory, caught lire under the eaves, but the flames at these points were speedily put out. The mill, a one-storey building of con* crete and brick, with an iron roof, was erected about three years ago. The in' suranees, all with the Royal Insurance Company, were: — Stock and stores, £4000; machinery, £3000; building, £1000. The employees of the spinning and hosiery mills number 25, and most of them are girls.

At a meeting of the directors of the company to-day it was uuanimoiwly decided to recommend to the shareholders that the mill be re-established as soon as possible.

OUTBREAK AT WAIPUKURAU.

WAIPUKURAU, Wednesday.

A fire last night destroyed an old twostorey building owned by Mrs. E. A. Biekneil, of Hamilton, in the centre of the town. The brigade did well to save the adi«'"'n«» building of Mr. H. Reckin, hairdresser and billiard saloon pro* prietor. The outbreak apparently origin* ated in a portion of the building*occupied by Mr. P. D. Henderson, florist, and spread to the other part occupied by Mr. C. A. Bliss, baker and confectioner, and to the top storey, occupied ae a dwelling by Mr. and Mrs. Cnattaway and child.

HOTEL DAMAGED

FEILDING, Wednesday.

An outbreak of Are was discovered in the staff's quarteu at the Denbigh Hotel this afternoon. Much damage was done by smoke and water* The premises arc owned by Mr. W. Hook and the licensee is Mr. MacPherson.
