ONE TREE HILL
KERBING AND CHANNELLING.
A MOTION RESCINDED.
A POLICY QUESTION."
Thp One Tree Hill Rond Board met last night, the chairman (Mr. R. G. Clark) presiding.
Several members protested against the the board's undertaking to kerb, channel and maintain the entrance to Campbell Park and the roadway round the statue for £150, when the board's engineer had estimated the cost at £500. Mr. Matheson maintained that the chairman was inconsistent in supporting this proposal when he had resolutely opposed the setting aside of a sum of money to kerb and channel streets in the district. I was decided, on the motion of Mr. Matheson, to spend £2.50 on the entrance to the park and footpaths.
At the previous meeting a motion to spend £3000 on the kerbing and channelling of streets was carried in the face of the determined opposition of the chairman. At last night's meeting Mr. Clark brought forward a motion to rescind it. In order to throw the matter open to discussion, the supporters of the scheme allowed tho rescinding motion to be carried. In the discussion that followed the chairman npain expressed his opposition to any scheme for spending revenue on permanent works. He would, in the event of the scheme being decided on, niake it a policy matter and thresh it out in an election. On the motion of Mr. Rowe it was decided by a majority of one to allot £1500 to street work/and add the remaining £1500 to the contingencies fund. Mr. Howe expressed the. hope that the board would spend a similar sum each year, and so carry out a continuous policy of improvement.
At the close of the meeting the engineer (Mr. J. DawsonJ rose to ask if lie still had the confidence of the board, as certiiin members had been busy questioning his work. It was explained liy the. chairman that it had been the board's policy to allow the engineer tc carry out urgent work* at his own discretion, reporting to the board at each meetinwhnt he hnd done. Other members explained that, being new to the board, they h.ul been surprised to find the engineer carrying out works that had not been authorised by the board, and their questions had been for the purpose of ascertaining the position. The engineer had their complete confidence.
