ART STUDENTS' REVELS.

MANY IN MOTLEY. Brilliant with light and dancing with colour, was the large gallery in Kitchener Street last evening, when the students of the Auckland School of Art held their annual ball. The decorations were very original and were the work of the students of the school. The whole of the big building was frescoed with la,rgc designs painted in the most modern manner, in many cases just a whirl ol brilliant' colour, and in others telling the stories of fairy lore as beloved by the little ones. The Three Bears wenthere in all their merry might, and the sad tale of the wooden soldier was also well depicted. Many of the designs were remarkable for their audacity of line and colour, each l>eing a panel of about 10ft long, set in a blue ground and divided from the next by hanging blue drapery, which gave a restful line to the otherwise dancing decoration, and was in keeping with the riotous colour scheme of the students' dresses. When the dancers took the floor for the grand march they made an interesting and pretty picture, as there were many dresses not often seen. Old friends were also there. Old Bill, tin hat and red nose, with a suppleness that he never knew in the trenches, walked cheek by jowl with a merry Kaffir, finely carried out, Robin Chaplin and Bluebeard (whose beard was very blue indeed), were to be seen with such, demure things as a quiet quaker maiden or a gay Spanish dancer, a maiden from Italy or just, one of our own pretty girls. Prizes were given for the most picturesque and best carried out dress and this fell to Miss W. Simpson, for a fine portrayal of a lady of the 13th century and for the most novel dress to Miss Luxford, dressed as a male Spanish dancer. For the men, Mr. K. G. Simpson, who took the part of Robin Hood, was the winner and Mr. J. Coath, as Old Bill, the most novel. A delightful Oriental dance was given during the evening by Miss Regina Rave.
