CYCLING PROPOSAL

MANUKAU FIFTY MILES RACE. KING'S BIRTHDAY RUN.

(By "SPROCKET.")

June 4. —22-mlles Handicap Road Race. June 4. — ">i-mlles Junior Road Race. In my notes in Inst evening's '•Star." in reference to the Manukau Club's race of last Saturday afternoon, I mentioned that a field of' 33 started. On further perusal of the starting I find that there were 30 competitors—a record entry to date. Of this number 32 finished the full course. 33 miles, proof of their enthusiasm for the sport. Now, if the above number would only reflect for n moment, they would find that during the afternoon the majority of them covered a distance of over 50 miles, for the scene of the start of the club'e races (Mangere Post Office) is nearly 10 miles from the citv.

Perhaps fornc were a bit tired on arrivinp home apain. bnt doc.* not the possibility of a club "fifty" nome Saturday afternoon, preferably in November when the day is longer present iteelf to those rider*. The race could start from the uMial place, and be run over an "out and home' , course. No difficulty would be encountered in finding a> suitable course, for already the Clevedon and back one has been recommended, and a run over thi* will be made on the King'* birthday, leaving Grafton Bridge at ft "a.m. Thie run will in no way be even X training spin over the course, but just a leisurely ride. Still, if some of the members wish to clock it in good time, they will be left alone to do so.

A word on these runs now. Some cyclists delijfht in going out for fhe sole purpose of dropping their club mates. This spirit, fostered perhaps by the competition of the Saturday afternoon races, is detrimental to such outing*. Besides, as is often the case, these particular speedsters only leave the group to race to, say, a point 10 miles further on, and there await the main body, only to repeat the performance again. If these riders would only bear in mind that ■»uch riding does not foster the best of club companionship I believe they would only too readily adopt a more leisurely gait.

Let me further remind member*—of which there are now 10o—that the general monthly meeting will be held during the week-end, and that a full muster is expected, as some important business will need to be discussed, for the annual meeting falls about the middle of July, when all trophies and priz.ee won during the season will be presented.
