NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor. Mr. A. E. Greenslade. presided, and Councillors C. H. Johnston. Frank Wilson. Harry Weaver. F. J. Fraser, Robt. Martin. A. J. Lennon, A. T. Munn and P. J. Ryan were also present. North Shore Destructor. —The Health Department is to be asked if the purchase l of the refuse removal plant could also bej made out or loan, without taking a poll of ratepayers, as well as the capital cost of' the destructor, as intimated in the requi-j sitioa approved by the Board of Health. Combined Fire Brigade.—A communication from the Birkenhead Borough Council requesting consideration of a joint fire brigade for the two districts itat referred to committee for consideration. Town Planning.—The resolutions of the combined meeting of the Birkenhead and Xorthcote Councils regarding town plan- j ning, recommending the inclusion of the whole Xorth Shore area in a comprehensive town planning scheme for greater Auckland were endorsed. Sewerage.—A conference of property owners adjacent to the sewerage tanks, the drainage engineer, the medical officer of health, and the council-in-conimittee •was arranged for next Tuesday evening. By-lawe.—Messrs. H. Weaver, F. Wilson, F. J. Fraser, P. J. Ryan and A. J. Lennon were appointed a By-laws Revision Committee. Princes Street Footpath.—The concrete sewer manhole, which was left four feet above the permanent level when forming the footpath near the "Goldhote" in Princes Street, is to be fenced off as a protection against accident to pedestrians. Sanitation.—An extension of the sanitary service contract for three months is to be arranged. ! Office Comfort.—Two electric radiators were purchased for heating the council chambers and town clerk's office. Standing Committees.—The Mayor moved that the whole council comprise the usual standing committees. An amendment by Mr. H. Weaver, however, was carried, that three committees. legal and financial, works and reserves be set up. A further amendment deferred the whole question till next meeting. Amalgamation.—Notice of motion wa* given by Mr. H. Weaver to the effect thai steps be initiated with a view to tho amalgamation of the Birkenhead ami Northcote boroughs.

NEW LYNN. i _____ A meeting of the New Lynn Town Board was held last evening. Mr. \V. (i. Lovie presided, and there were also present Messrs. W. L. Titchener. J S Atehurst. C. E. H. Putt, I. Hushes, and J. A. Fielding. Buildings.—The building inspector reported that seven permits had been issued during the past fortnight. Xine buildings ■were in course of erection. Water Works.—The turncock reported upon various works in hand. Recent connections made to the board* main.* brought the total number of consumers ui> to 691. Sanitation.—The sanitary inspector, in a report, urged the board to immediately kerb and channel a certain portion of the Great Xorth Road where stagnant water was lying. The chairman agreed that this matter needed urgent attention, and the board decided to do the work as soon a.» possible. Worke.—The foreman reported that the Gardner Street culvert had now been completed to the full width of the roadway at a cost of £386, which was below the estimate. The sum of £588 14/8 had been expended on the construction of the Willerton Avenue culvert. It was expected that this work would be finished by th* end of the week. The estimate for this job was £670. Traffic.—The Traffic Inspector reported having given special attention to the lighting of motors and cycles on the Great North Road. He asked the board to give consideration to street bus stops in the district. The Works Committee was asked! to report upon this matter at the next meeting. Workers] Educational Association.— Request for financial assistance was received. One guinea donation was made. Soldiers' Memorial.—A further letter was received from the Kev. Rankin in respect to the suggestion that the Triansle Reserve (situated in the centre of the township) be used for the purpoee of erecting a soldiers' memorial Suggestions were made as to how the scheme might be proceeded with and a monumental memorial recommended. The board, however, were not favourably impressed, and no action was taken. Wattle Street.-Mr. C. F. Shanly complained of the water tables being washed away on this road. The chairman of the Works Committee explained that this occurred owing to the steep grade, and the only remedy was to kerb and channel the road, a work that the board was not able to undertake at the present time. Referred to the Works Committee, with a recommendation that the lighting of the street be improved. Street Lighting.—The chairman referred to a number of complaints received in respect to street lights being out at night. The position was so unsatisfactory that he bad wired the Waitemata Power Board that day. It was decided to send a further communication to the Power Board, and to ask that the maintenance staff be connected with the local telephone exchange. Titirangi Road.—The condition of thi* road waa again referred to by the chairman, who suggested that the work of reconditioning this street be proceeded with without delay-. The board agreed, and Uhe sum. of 4300 is to be qgent. <
