SWEEPING ON.
GREAT WALL OF WATER
Further 20,000 Refugees From
Mississippi.
LEVEES CRUMBLING.
(By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) NEW ORLEANS, May 16. The coast guards have rescued over 3000 refugees, who were in a desperate plight, being huddled together on a weakened levee near Atehafalaya. It is now believed* that no others are in imminent danger. Naval aviators flew over the sugar bowl lands and declared that the flood tide is 50 miles below the Big Bend crevasses. Parishes far below these are being rapidly evacuated. Preparations have been made to care for an additional 20,000 refugees from the south and central parishes of Louisiana. The levees at Bayou Des Glaises are slowly crumbling. A great wall of water is pouring over the fertile lands. The Red Cross and other relief workers have planned to open new centres throughout the district for newlyrescued homeless. Mr. H. C. Hoover (Secretary for Commerce) has arrived at New Orleans to confer regarding the plans of rehabilitation.
