COST OF UNMARRIED LIFE.
"£3OO A FAIR AVERAGE." BANKRUPT'S CONTENTION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. "What do you consider a fair average for a single man to live on economically, and yet enjoy himself J" asked a solicitor of William Leslie Carr, bankrupt auctioneer, at the meeting of his creditors yesterday. "Three hundred," replied bankrupt. "Do you know that married men are paying rent and supporting a family on £4 8/ a week? Do you think £300 is necessary for ordinary requirements?" asked the solicitor. "I think that is somewhere near the mark," was the reply. Bankrupt stated that when he was receiving £8 a. week he was contributing £4 to his parents for their support and his board. He had placed the moral obligation before the legal one. Counsel pointed out that a widow was dependent on the interest payable by bankrupt on a mortgage.
