£1250 GIFT TO CITY.
TO COMMEMORATE MR. MOSS DAVIS' BIRTHDAY. ORPHANS AND PHILANTHROPIC INSTITUTES BENEFIT. A gift of £1250 has been made by Sir. Sloss Davis to assist the work among the orphans of Auckland. It is also desired by the donor that a portion of the money should be devoted to philanthropic activities.
Sir. Moss Davis, who was formerly in business in Auckland, is now in London, and lias made the gift to commemorate his eightieth birthday, which took place on April D. As a boy of 14 Sir. Davis arrived at Lytteltou from England- in ISCI. Some time later he was engaged in business in Kelson as a general merchant, and he came to Auckland in ISSS, when he joined the firm of Hancock and Co. He later became managing director of the company. Numerous gifts, including works of art and old manuscripts, have been made by Sir. Davis to Auckland. Twenty years ago Mr. and Sirs. Davis went to live in London, and Sir. Davis was engaged during the war on a committee that was responsible for attending to the needs of wounded and convalescent soldiers.
At the birthday party that was held on April 3 tile health of Mr. Davis was proposed by Mr. T. P. O'Connor, "father" of the House of Commons. Mr. Davis takes a great interest in New Zealand affairs, and his advice and experience of business matters in London has been at the service of many visiting Xew Zealanders, especially Aueklandcrs. •
