DESERVED PRISON.
GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE. YOUTHFUL IMMIGRANT'S LAPSE. STEALS TWO BICYCLES. ''This is the immigrant who stole two bicycles, sold one, and was caught ill the act of taking the other," was the way Chief Detective Cummings introduced to Mr. Hunt at the Police Court this morning Norman Frederick Thornton, who was presented for sentence. Mr. Cummings said that Captain Davies was willing to help accused, if he was given a chance. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, then said that during the two years that Thornton had been in the Dominion he had left twelve different positions. "Oh, that tells a story,'' said the magistrate. Mr. Campbell thought that Thornton might do well on probation if the terms imposed were very, strict. Mr. Hunt said he felt like giving Thornton six months* imprisonment, so that he would have to stay in a position. "He deserves to go to gao!. but probably the best thing to do is to give him the one last chance he asks lor," said Captain Davies, of the Salvation Army. In placing accused on probation for "a period of two years, Mr. Hunt told him that it would be the last chance he would get in this country. "If you don't behave yourself in future there is six months waiting for you," Mr. Hunt added.
