UNEMPLOYMENT.
POSITION IN WELLINGTON.
NOT WORSE THAN LAST YEAR,
STATEMENT BY MAYOR
(By telegraph.r-OwD Correspondent.*
WELLINGTON, this day,
'•There is no doubt that unemployment during the winter is going to be severe," said the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. G. A. Troup. ''Although there is no indication at present that it will be more bo than last year, so long as the Wellington public provide for their legitimate requirements. No serioua difficulty is anticipated aboiit bona fide Wellington residents. The city being centrally situated, naturally a large number of men gravitate from the North and South, making it more difficult to deal with the local unemployed. Should relief works be necessary, the council would, I am sure, do as they did last year—co-operate with the Government in finding employment, giving preference in the case of married men with families."
Up to the present no deputations of unemployed have waited upon the Mayor, although at this time last year the" pinch waa being severely felt.
