"It appears that he has been listening to street propaganda of the White New Zealand League which inflamed his mind," said Senior Sergeant Lander when Basil Claude Paley, a gold miner, admitted an tssault on Wing Hing. Defendant also pleaded guilty to having wilfully destroyed fruit, valued at 17/6, the property of Hing. Accused, said Sergeant Lander, went up to Hing outside his shop on Lambton Quay, and, without provocation, struck him with his fist. Then went into the shop, where a melee followed, and fruit worth 17/ C was damaged. Mr. Page imposed a £3 fine for assault, and £2 for damage, in default, one month's imprisonment.
