TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES. , i (By ORIOX.) I SEASON'S FIXTURES. Mny "11. —Oamnru Trotting Club. June .".. 4. —Canterbury Pnrk Trotting Club. ; June IS, 22. —Auckland Trotting Club. Boada's Child, without getting any money, went a real good race in the Hautapu Handicap. He is an aged gelding by Native Child-Boadicea and is trained by C. 15. Griffin at Matamata. Although Uncle Bert won the saddle event in a jog, his easy v*jtory was largely due to the excellent riding of j A. \V. Broughton. He is a fine rider of pacers, in fact, he has few superiors in the Dominion. Charming Pronto is on the improve, and both at the Thames and again on Saturday at Cambridge he went real good races without winning. As he is only a four-year-old, there is plenty of time yet for him to come good. Festive Moon raced unhoppled in the Stewards' Handicap on Saturday at Cambridge, and finished at the tail end of the field. The Great Audubon mare went badiy all through, and unless she is hoppled up, on her present handicap she has little chance of winning a race. A mare whp shaped at Cambridge as though she Will win a race or two later on was Beatty, an aged daughter of Hal Zolock, out of a Rothschild mare. She started twice and finished fourth in the Farewell after going a good race all the way. She is one of Sid. August's team at Otahuhu. Dealer is a bad horse at the barrier , and in the Hautapu Handicap he settled his prospects by failing to leave right. Later in the afternoon, when held on the mark by an attendant, he got away well, but although he was living with the leaders, he never seemed to be pacing smoothly and he did not finish w'ell in the run home. Had Grattan Thorpe been a solid customer he may have been in the money in the President's Handicap, the mile and a-quarter saddle event. The only time he appeared to be really putting any heart into his work was nearing the home turn, but he then had no chance of winning, and H. Sewell did not knock him about. At the home turn in the Stewards' Handicap, nothing appeared to be going better than Black Ballin and it looked as though E. S.. Groat was at last going to break the run of bad luck he has experienced this season. However, it was not to be and in being straightened up for the run home he left his feet and disappeared from the picture.

Good money went on Van Rich in the Farewell Handicap at Cambridge in which he was considered nicely handicapped in being placed on a 2.19 mark. The son of Van Coronado looked really well, but he did not show up in the race. He has had a particularly hard time at recent meetings and a short spell might not do him any harm. A tip at Cambridge for the Introductory Trot was Billy Carbine, a gelding by El CarbineKoromoko. Sufficient support was forthcoming to send him out third favourite, but he did not shape well enough in the race to suggest he ever had a chance and Iβ was really never near' the leaders. Billy Carbine is in the same stable as Nelson Tasker and is trained by A. Ayres at Henderson. Special Bell, the six-year-old by Gold Bell-Special Diamond, who recently was put into work by A. Julian was given a, run in the'lntroductory Trot at Cambridge, but did not make a good showing. However, he is very green to racing yet and a bit of time will do a lot for nim as he shapes very promisingly in his work. Julian will give him every opportunitv to come good and the patient policy may pay l>est in the long run. Golden Park very nearly brought off ft surprise in the' Leamington Handicap, when she was only beaten by Lola Reklaw. As has frequently happened with Golden Park, she ran her best race first start, although she ,was prominent in the Stewards' Handicap later in the day. Up till a few weeks ago H. Kimiamont i was working the daughter of Gold Bell and Lady Park, but she was then taken over by her owner, N. Cunningham, who drsve her on Saturday. The first time Hypo strikes form he will make the work of the handicapper look foolish. The son of Ghoai was on a 2.18 mark at Cambridge and his owner is indeed lucky in getting the gelding so leniently treated. The fact that Hypo did not win is probably satisfactory to the handicapper, biit when the gelding does score it would be interesting to have the opinion of owners of other horses in the race. By letting a horse like Hypo out three or four seconds in a mile the handicapper is unduly penalising other horses, because if Hypo had displayed anything like his true "form, on Saturday, the race would have been «nlv a workout for him. For a long time the Admiral Wood gelding, Admiral Lock, disappointed hia party when well, supported, but this Reason he has done considerably better. He won at,Te Aroha, was just beaten by Taipare at the Thames, and scored again at Cambridge on Saturday. Ho is shewing a lot of grit at the finish of his races, as each time A. Julian had to drive him hard in a close finish, and Admiral Lock held on very determinedly. Julian, like a few others, trains both gallopers and trotters* and makes a success of both branches. In his younger days he was one of the best riders"in Auckland, and many a good race was vron by his mounts. Getting too heavy for flat race riding, he rode over fences, end again was one of the best horsemen in the land. He was mostly attached to the late Mr. J. B. Williamson's stable, but he was such a good horseman that he was never allowed to git on the stand, and hie services were always in demand. Aβ in the galloping sport, so also has he Ijeen successful with trotters and pacers, and it was under the most atrocious weather conditions that ho drove Admiral Wood to victory in the Auckland Trotting Cup. The race wax fun in h«avy rain, with flashes of lightnV>2 and peals of thunder, and through the rain and slush the horses tramped, Admiral Wood conceding all his <H»ponentß a start, and winning easily. jk» b«ui was the weather that after the dl?iA ■*£•■■*•*»«!■ held a meeting and Jcded to postpone the remainder of Hμ programme till the folding da 7. m

N.Z. TROTTING CUP. ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES. Having decided that the stake attached to the next New Zealand Trotting Cup will be £3000 and the race be for horses that have done, or been handicapped to do 4.28 or better at a meeting held by a club recognised by the New Zealand Trotting Association, says the "Christchurch Press," the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club look like receiving excellent support for the big November Handicap.
