RICCARTON NOTES.

JOCKEY HUMPHRIES SUSPENDED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHBISTCHUBCH, Monday. Accompanying the stake for the Amberley Cup on Saturday was a handsome silver cup presented to the club by the well-known Riccarton trainer, J. McComtoe. Among the horses who carried his colours for several seasons was Pyjama, a Martian gelding, ■wlio was a very solid and reliable performer. Pyjama was bred by Mr. G. N. McLean, now president of the Aroberley Racing Clnb, and it was a kindly thought for the good sport from whom he secured a. profitable horse that prompted the Biccarton trainer to give 'the cup, which was won tor A. McAulay by Sir Soy on Saturday. Volant received serious interference soon after the start of the Seadown Handicap at Amberley on Saturday. His rider, D. Cotton, stated after the race that the trouble wag caused by G. Humphries, rider of Nine of Spades. The judicial stewards, after considering Cotton's complaint, decided to suspend Humphries until May 31. Three yearlings purchased at Syffney sales have arrived at Riccarton. Mr. H. A. Knight owns one by Polymestor, while the other two, by Polymestor and Shillinglee respectively, were secured by his trainer, F. D. Jones. Charlatan and Sun Up left on Saturday night to fulfil engagements at the Eginont Racing Club's meeting. The Riccarton pair look well, but they can scarcely be quite at their best so early in the winter campaign. T. H. Glllett went in charge, and was accompanied by E. Shaw, who will ride Charlatan. Radiac had a couple of schools over the steeplechase fences at Riccarton last week, with Charlatan, and he came through the ordeal with'satisfaction to his trainer, A. B. Wormald. On the first occasion he got into the air a lot at each fence, but gave quite a decent showing for a novice. He was tried again on Thursday, when he was responsible for a high-class exhibition, in which he out-jumped Charlatan at more than one fence. It looks now as though Radiac will make good as a cross-country performer. _- '■. . At the last meeting of ttie Canterbury District Committee, W. Baker was recommended lor a trainers' license. This prob-

ably means that Rapier and 3lr. G. O. Holmes' other horses trill not return t* Kiccarton to be trained.

J. King, a son of the ex-Biccaxton ttainet, E. W. King, returned from Sydney irlth Xf H. Gillett, whose employ ae has entered, a*. an apprentice. \ •y^
