PONSONBY CROQUET CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Ponsonby Croquet Club was held on Saturday last in the club pavilion. There was a large attendance of members, presided over by Mrs. Moore, president. Annual reports and balance sheet were very satisfactory. New officers were elected for the coming season. Prizes for the club competitions were presented by various members, and were won by:—A championship, Mrs. Hilton; runner-up, Mrs. Gallaher. B championship,' Mrs. 'Gall; runner-up, Mrs. Buckle. A championship doubles, Mesdames Hilton and Adams. A and B doubles, Mesdames Bell and C. E. Hardley. B handicap singles, Mrs. Buckle; runner-up, Mrs. T. Chapman. Challenge rose bowl and trophy, Mrs. Venters. The club closes its season for play on Saturday next with a progressive afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. W. Lomax, of Sydney, are at the Central Hotel. Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Doctor have reached Auckland from Wellington, and are spending a holiday here. Mr. and Mrs. R. Cobb are Hamilton visitors to Auckland. Mrs. Laird and her daughter have arrived in Auckland, and are staying at Stonehurst. Colonel and Mrs. Biaaet are leaving shortly for Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. J. Mackie are visitors from Calcutta, and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Sinclair, of Sydney, are paying a visit to Auckland. The Welfare Circle meets at the Lyceum Club to-morrow morning. This circle deals wtih the needs of those in the town who are in need of some assistance, and since its inception has done a good deal of quiet useful work in helping poor people and especially mothers and their children in little ways that are always acceptable to them. • • # * The Mayoress , War Memorial Library League, which has done such good work in supplying books to those in hospitals and at institutions, lighthouses, and even to Nine Island, is holding a jumble sale an Friday afternoon to raise money Ho help costume their activitiest ~.~
