FOREST FIRES.
Extensive Conflagration in
America.
DENSELY POPULATED AREAS
NEW YORK, April 15. Hundreds of forest fires in six New England States and in the State of New \ork have laid waste thousands of acres of woodlands and endangered many towns and farms. One death is reported. Fires on Lon™ Island menaced some of the finest estates in America. More than 1000 volunteer fire-fighters, in addition to -the regular forces, have been working for days in the effort to save small towns near the city of New York. In several cases sparks have ignited buildings which could not be saved. The dry spring weather, which has virtually amounted to a semi-drought throughout the north-eastern coastal areas, has heightened the danger, particularly as these fires are occurring in the most densely populated areas in America.
