U.S.A. BLOCKADE.

British Vessels to he

Seized.

ANTI-SMUGGLING TREATY

WASHINGTON, April 15.

The recent decision of the United States Supreme Court, upholding the prosecution of the captain and crew of the British steamer Quadra, under the provisions of the anti-smuggling treaty with Britain, has caused a now and most extensive campaign by the coastguard against liquor runners.

Officials say they intend to confiscate all liquor-carrying vessels on the British register found within one hour's sailing distance of the United States. The ruling of the Court will greatly facilitate the work of the coastguard, because the majority of the smugglers now fly the British flag.

Of course the varying speeds of different vessels must be estimated accurately when making seizures. Cutters and patrol boats will establish a blockade over 100.000 square miles along the entire line of the shore.
