WINTER GARDENS.
DOMAIN ATTRACTION. SCHEME OF IMPROVEMENTS. SUM OF £9300 AVAILABLE. An announcement of a pleasant nature was made by the Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon) at a meeting of the Auckland City Council on Thursday evening, when he stated that Mr. William Elliott had forestalled a bequest in his will by making a donation of £4000 to duplicate the winter gardens in the Auckland Domain. Mr. Elliott had interested Mr. H. T. Goldie. Mr. H. E. Vaile and others in the proposal and a number of citizens had raised £5500 for the purpose, making the total amount now available £0500. The Mayor said the subscribers were: Sir George Elliot, Messrs. H. T. Goldie, C. V. Houghton, W. R. Wilson, V. .T. Larner, Alfred X. Bankart, D. L. Nathan, Fred. W. Wilson, F. C. Mappin. John Marshall. John Court, Misses Cameron, Messrs. Joseph M. and .'. Martyn Wilson, Joseph Butler, S. Vaile and Son, Ltd., Winstone, Ltd., Anonymous No. 1, J. W. Tattersfield, Anonymous No. 2, each £250; Messrs. Ernest H. Davis, W. Cecil Leys, each £125; Messrs. Percy H. Upton, Geo. 11. Fleming, James J. O'Brien, James Is. Donald." each £100; Messrs. A. J. Entrican and David Dingwall, each £30; total £5500. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to each individual donor. A vote of thanks was also passed to Messrs. Gunimer and Ford, who will act as honorary architects for the new building. A plan of the proposed improvements, which was exhibited, featured a building similar to the existing winter gardens building and adjacent to it, the area between the two buildings to he lain out in terraces formed of dwarfed walls of red brick, flagged walks, with a sunken garden and pond as a centre. There will also be a pergola carried on dwarf walls of red brick to harmonise with the surroundings.
