VARSITY BOXING.

PRELIMINARY BOUTS. FINALS THIS EVENING. SOME FAST CONTESTS STAGED. Some bright boxing was seen at the Town Hall this morning when the eliminating rounds of the New Zealand Inter-University boxing tournament were staged in the presence of a fair attendance. Mr. Frank Burns. "or many years honorary referee to the Northern Boxing Association, acted as referee. The lightweight champion for lfi2fi, F. Davis (Canterbury) was beaten by H. T. Henderson (Auckland) in decisive fashion. This was the only surprise of the morning. Some of the contestants made a poor showing owing to lack of proper training. In several of the bouts the boys showed to advantage, and there were one or two particularly fast contests. The finals will he staged this evening. Results: — Bantam-weight (B>t Gib or under). —W. In the middle of the fourth round the referee awarded the decision to Wilson. Light-weight (lost v .r under) R T Henderson (Auckland) bc:il F i; Davis (Canterbury i. Davis carried the fight to the Aucklander. but lie was inclined r,7 hold and had to be warned several times There was more roughing than boxing in round three, the Aucklander indicting heavy blows to head and body whenever the Can't erhurv man.
