SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED. TWO AUCKLANDERS INCLUDED. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The first scholarships awarded by the Scientific and Industrial Research Department were announced to-day as follows:— Mr. N. S. Alexander, Auckland University College, for research, into the absorption of X-rays. • Mr. J. C. Andrews, Auckland University College, for the mutarotation of sugars.

Mr. P. W. Aitken, Otago University, investigation of flax gum with a view to its better removal and utilisation.

Mr. M. N. Rogers, Canterbury College, research into the helium content of New Zealand's natural gases.
