CHRISTCHURCH, tliis (lav

"Three samples of milk taken l.y an inspector on February 13, 17 Mid Is last showed that the amount of water that had been added was 25, 27.2 and 20.0 per cent in each case," said Mr. Brown in the Magistrate's Court when appearing for the Department in charges against Albert John McDonald of having sold milk below standard.

"The case is rather extraordinary on account of the immense quantity of water that had been added," continued counsel. "The sample taken >n February 15 showed that there was a quart of water in every gallon of milk, and the second sample was wor*e. The inspector knew that defendant got his milk from a supplier, and he went early on the third occasion to get a sample of the supplier's milk. Unfortunately, the latter had just gone." Mr. White, who appeared for defendant, said his client t<>»k between two and four gallons of milk per day for the convenience of his customers." The supplier had evidently seen the inspector's ear at McDonald's and had been put on his guard. It was unfortunate that neither the inspector nor defendant got "a fair go" in the matter. Both were keen to see the root of the trouble. The supplier had been serving McDonald for twelve months.

The magistrate said some due would have to he inflicted, in view of the amount of water that had been added. Defendant was fined £2 and costs.
