TAKAPUNA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The last meeting of the 'lakapnna Borough Council before the municipal elections was held last evening Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison), and Messrs. J. W. Williamson. F. W. Suckling. G. H. Matthews, 1"'. E. X. G.uidin. A. H. Wilkie, K. 11. Grcville, G. Creamer, and .1. Collins.

1 iilm !\oad Bridge.—'The Waitemai.i County Council advised that the extension of twelve months asked for by the council for llie Inga Road bridge would not be opposed, provided tha f an assurance be given that the work would be completed within the given time, and that a motor road be provided not later than September next. It was decided that the County Council be given an assurance that the work will be carried out in terms of their letter, and that application be made to the Public Works Department for the extension. Milfonl Storage Culvert.—The engineer | reported that the number of applications made for connection with the Millord | sew el had exceeded the number antiei- j pated. and that it was necessary that the construction of the storage culvert should j be expedited. On the recommendation of the public services committee it was j decided that the plans of the culvert and sea wall be submitted to Mr. Hush, the city engineer, and another drainage engineer to be chosen by the borough engineer and solicitor. Fire Fighting Affairs. - -The superintendent of the fire brigade advised that tin* necessary gear for the auxiliary brigade at Bayswater. with tin exception of the hand reel, had been procured. Streets Maintenance.—The statistical return of streets maintenance for the twelve months ended March 151, 1!L.", including salaries, showed a total expenditure of £S:SSG. Genera! Football Ground.--A deputation from the newly-formed Rugby football club waited on the council re the provision of grounds. As the proposed playing area at Taharoto Park will not be available for plav this season it was decided to assist the club in the preparation o' two fields which have been offered by Father O'Connor. A letter from the Auckland Rugby Union asked the council to grant as many grounds as possible for the playing of games on Saturday afternoons.

A Motion Rescinded.—A notice of motion that the resolution caried on March 9, recording the council's objection to the action of the Mayor in lodging an appeal in connection with the tramways purchase, ho rescinded was moved by Mr. Greville. In speaking to his motion, Mr. Orcville said that it had been understood > from the outset that the case would he taken to the Appeal Court l>y the unsuccessful party. When put to the mccting the motion was carried, only Mr. Matthews, who said that he had • >osed all expenditure in connection with the proposal, dissenting. Classification of Roads.—A rccommenda-! tion from the Works Committee that alii foads in the district be classified as fourth-; class l oads, with the exception of the I Great North Road, was carried. Municipal Association.—The chairman submitted a report at" the recent meeting i of the executive of the above association.! when over forty remits were dealt with.' Buildings.—The inspector reported that seven permits had been issued during tliej past fortnight, and that there were cicrht buildings in course of erection. I Hospital Wireless Equipment Fund.— | In response to a request for a donation toj | this fund, the board voted £1 ]/. Whan Bridge Conference.—A letter was received from the Avondale Borough j Council, in which it was suggested that' the proposed conference of local bodies in respect to the construction of a new bridge' over the Whan Creek do not take place until > after the municipal elections. This was agreed to. Drainage Loan.—Letters were received; from Messrs. Frater Brothers and the j Public Trust Office re the drainage loan j of £75,000. The Public Trust Oflicc offered the money at six per cent, covering a i period of 3614 years. The board decided i to discuss the matter in committee. Folk Street.—Messrs. H. Smith and others informed the board that they were prepared to initiate a town planning scheme on this road. They stated that if the board was prepared to donate the! necessary shrubs and construct a pedestrian walk on the outer edge of the footpath the residents would put down the margin j in lawn and maintain same. The board' fully approved of the scheme. j Size of Building Sections.—Tn accord-! ance with notice of motion given, Mr. i Akehurst moved '"That the words 'one! quarter' be deleted from section 26, part 1 3. of the district by-laws, and that the' words 'one-fifth' be inserted. Except r.s provided by section 28. no person shall I ; erect a house upon a site of a less area! than one-fifth of an acre, and unless such | : site shall have a frontage of not less than fifty feet to a road." Thje motion was . carried after a lengthy discussion, an , amendment that the question be deferred for two years until sanitary drainage had ' been completed was lost.
