TUESDAY'S TOUR OF CITY.

ROUTE NOT ADVERTISED

REQUEST TO MAYOR

The actiou of the authorities in not announcing the route followed in the tour of the city and suburbs by the Duke and Duchess on Tuesday afternoon has been the subject of comment from certain quarters, but the Mayor (Mr. Geo. Baildon) made it clear this morning that ttiere was a perfectly good explanation, and that the omission was justified. The Mayor said that when arrangements were made for the sightseeing tour of the city he was specially requested not to announce the route to be followed as it was the wish of the Royal couple that the run should be carried out quietly so that the beauties of Auckland could be enjoyed under the best conditions. "Much as I shoud have liked to make known the route to be taken, I could not, of course, do so when it was requested otherwise," added the Mayor. "I informed the Mayor of Mount Eden of the time the party would reach the mountain, and also the chairman of the One Tree Hill Road Board of the visit to the TTill. also the president and secretary of the Auckland Racing Club of the time the Ellerslie racecourse would be reached. But although the route was not advertised, there were quite bis crowds at different portions, while at the top of Mount Eden and particularly at Ellerslie. the con •restion was such that the Duke and Duchess had difficulty in setting about. We realised the responsibility of being : n charge of the Royal party.
