AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION

The beautiful grouiuls at Government Ilouse presented uu animated sight yesterday afternoon, when the reception for their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of York, given by their Excellencies, Sir Charles and Lady Alice lergusson, took place. The grounds were delightful, with full-foliaged oaks casting cool shade, and the warm sun gilding the picture. The band of the First Auckland Infantry Regiment, under Lieutenant-Bandmaster A. J. Clareburt, was stationed oil the far lawn, and all through the afternoon rendered an enjoyable programme of music. The Duke and Duchess, accompanied by Sir Charles Fergusson, were stationed on the lawn directly in front of tUe entrance to the stone terrace, accompanied by their staffs, and the guests tiled before them. Sir Charles Fergusson welcomed the guests, and presented them to the Duke and Duchess, who bowed and smiled acknowledgment of the homage paid them. \ The Duchess of York was charmingly gowned in a very pale shade of beige, with a shade of pink in it, made with a softly draped effect, full skirt, and tunic effect finished with a cape collar. Her hat was of crinoline straw, very simple, as was the whole costume, and finished with a trail of roses in darker tones of the same colour. She also carried a short parasol in the same shades, and a small gold handbag.

Lady Cavan wore pale biscuit crepe de chine, finely pleated, and a hat in the same tone. A beige-coloured wrap was finished with a posy o.i the shoulder.

The Hon. Airs. Little CJilmour wore a georgette frock, patterned in small design, in tones of red and black on white, and simple hat, finished with ribbon in colours to tone.

Airs. J. G. Coates was in black georgette, and cream lace, worn over shell - pink crepe de chine, with black crinoline hat. Lady Fergusson, wife of Admiral Sir James A.
