VESTEY'S HUGE ENTERPRISE. FROM RANCH TO SHOP. From the great ranches of the Argentine to the small butcher's shop in the English country village. The line of communications between these two points is to be completely controlled by Britain's great meat trust, operating as the Union Cold Storage Co. Commenting on the recent compromise effected between American and British interests, so as to end the Argentine meat war, the "London Times" says:— In view of this situation the development of the Union Cold Storage Company is interesting, since it gives that concern a large reserve of facilities for supplying meat to the European market and probably foreshadows corresponding expansion on this side of the Atlantic. This is a company which deals with the retail as well as the wholesale side of the business. It has over 2500 retail shops in this country and in France, and when its new service of steamships, the Blue Star Line, starts it will be able to claim that it brings the meat direct from the farms in Argentina to the consumer in Europe. Its jreat new frigorifico at the South Dock, Buenos Aires, began work on Monday, January 3. The firm has already two other slants of a similar character in Argentina md one in Uruguay, which have a huge jutput. The new undertaking will be lapable of dealing with 5000 cattle daily vhen the circumstances demand so large m additional output. The cattle arrive by ;rain from the farms 200 to 400 miles dis;ant, and after being slaughtered are put ip and passed on to the refrigerating departments!
