A RADIO INNOVATION.

RELAYING PROGRAMMES. AUCKLAND LEADS THE WAY. A highly successful experiment in wireless broadcasting was carried out last night, when IYA relayed a programme from Christchurch. The music was picked up by a receiving station nt Takapunn, whence it reached IYA by a land line and was broadcasted. Christchurch also relayed from the Auckland station, but was not so successful. This is the first time the experiment has been made in New Zealand, and IYA claims to have started half-all-hour before the Christchurch station, thus being the first station in New Zealand to relay a musical programme. A message from our Wellington correspondent states that many wireless listeners-iii were astonished last night to henr the same music coming from 3YA and IYA, with practically equal strength and quality. This experiment in re-broadcasting was a remarkable success. A curious feature during part of the time was that the music in rcbrondcasting from Auckland was much better than that heard directly from Christchurch, owing to the temporary fading and atmospheric distortion, which affected reception here, but not in Auckland. Taking it all round, the quality of the relay was remarkably good, thanks to freedom from atmospherics. Later, when Mr. Coates was speaking at IYA, the Christchurch station attempted to re-broadcast his speech, but ae heard here it was a complete failure. Only a few words were faintly audible through the terrific uproar of interviewing noises. The experiments were a vivid demonstration both of the possibilities and the limitations of radio relays.
