NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENTS. II.C Parnell.—ln 1888 the N.Z. Cup was won. by Mr. P. Butler's three-year-old. Manton, who carried (J.lO. He was!ridden bv-Holmes, and the time ' :j.::n: .-•-..- .-• hio.e V'ijl be better when the ground is sofieswflian it was -at Wanganui. Jhe Thorn looked well at Wanganui, ain I with some racing he is sure to be hard to dispose of before long. Crazone was only started once at Wanganui, and she will be heard of auain before long. She failed to get into a [.lace, but finished sixth. Skypoint, who was a starter at Wanganui on the second day is by The Welkin, but he has not raced up to expectations. He was never dangerous in the Matarawa Hack Race. The Jackson Stakes -was a good race at the finish, for only necks divided Kerernoana, Lysander, and The Hawk, while Grand Knight was a head away fourth. The Hawk was the unlucky one. -Merry Jest, if. she only repeats her form on the second day at Wanganui, can be expected to be troublesome in sprint races in the near future. She iliii not seem to be so much on her toes as she usually is. Ohui, the full sister to Tamatete and Tukia, was a competitor on a couple of occasions at the Wanganui meeting, but tailed to get into the money. He, like iiis relatives, is an inmate of F. Tilley's stable at Wanganui. Deluge showed up well in the Fare-welt-Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday, but failed to get into a place. He has been a most disappointing horse this season. He can do anything on the .track, but does not repeat that fornf-.in his races. Beaumont -was only produced at Wanganui on one occasion, and he ran a good race over a mile and half a furlong. Beaumont was usually looked on as a sprinter, but with a little more lacing he can confidently be expected to run out a good mile. Ardath, who won the Fqrdell Hurdles fit Wanganui, is a good horse. He jumps well and has pace. After Gold Peak had carried on the running for over a mile, he easily headed him and was not troubled in beating Matu by five lengths. Ardath is bred rightly on the dam's side for jumping. , Shirley did not seem to go too well on the first day of the Wanganui meeting for she had every show, but stopped in the straight to finish fourth. The race-on the first day apparently did her good, for she was going better than anything at the distance on Saturday, and scored nicely at the finish. It is to be hoped that the indisposition which prevented Mr. C. O'Connor ti'i'in starting on the second day at Wanganui, is not serious, for a starter of his ability cannot well be spared I rmn the sport for long. His many II sends will wish him a very speedy rei- very. Benzora was started in a mile and l.oyds race at Wanganui on the second day in preference to the sprint event. He ran a great race for about seven furlongs and then faded out. The sprint later in the day looked to hold good prospect* for him and it is strange that his owner did not start hi 111 in that in preference to a middledistance event. Blue Peter fell Okoia Handicap at Wanganui just as the field turned out of the straight and came to srief. As he raced past the Stewards' Stand he ran right up in the centre of the field and it looked as though he had bolted, for he was careering along at a great pace. His rider, T. Bound, received slight concussion, and after beins kept in the casualty room for a while was sent to hispital. Blue Peter is a pretty useful sort, and he can be expected to get on the winning list before long. Whenuanui got a much better posil ion early in the Matarawa Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday than he did in the Petrie Handicap on the opening day, and when it came to the business end \ut beat King's Folly nicely. Whenuanui has been running well recently, for out of his last six starts he has" won five events and finished third on the other occasions. His next start will be in open company, for he is now well out of hack class, and at Wanganui was only running out his nominations in this company. —'

Princess Ronnie i;as returned 10 .. iLllerslie from (Jisborne. _____ c Euphonium was produced on Saturday n it Wanganui, and though he looked well n ic failed to fiuieh on. S' ilireusonta was only started once at ~ the Wanganui meeting, and finished third. He looks as though he will not . ll be long in again striking form. Opa wae prominent in his races at ' ( Wanganui, and finished a good fourth in ° :he 1>...: ."itikes on Saturday. He \ ' should not be long before he is on the 1 s vvinning list again. t( ° Panther made a good showing in the * Harrison Two-year-old Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday. He was giving f Damaris a good start coming across the l * cop and finiihed very well in eeeond Place- t Lyeauder made a bold bid to win the Jackson Stakes, but had to go under by t a short margi to Reremoana. He was c one or" the leaders till well into the fl straight, and fought out the issue well g with Ueremoana. ] Ruanui was gecond ou the firtt day of the Wanganui meeting and on Saturday was made favourite for the Harrison Two-year-old Handicap. He. however, failed badly, being last when the post was reached. The Hawk was not well ridden at J Wanganui. In each of hie efforts he r was iiemmed in on the rails at* they - came into the straight, and could not get out quick enough. His finishing efforts on both occasions, however, enow that ' ( he is pretty well just now. j I Mr. \V. E. Bidwell has sold the three- j year-old gelding Direction, by Elevation *—MU-ij Mildred, to an Indian owner. ! Direction was shipped last week to Sydney, for transhipment to a steamer bound tor Singapore, after which he will | have a train journey of about 300 miles 1 to his new quarters. j Old Xukumai continues to do well on 1 the flat, tie was in at the minimum ; in the Earle Stakes at Wanganui on ' Saturday, but had to put up 121b over- J weig'.it to eecuie the services of R. Reed. In a good finish he was beaten by threequartere of a length by Novar, but finished a head in front of Mint Leaf. Mask was very disappointing at Wanganui. In the Stewards' Handicap on the first day he looked ae though he would win for "he was clear of the others entering the straight. However, the best he could do w.s to finish fourth. When it came to the last bit in the Earle Stakes, Mask was unable to go on with it, and was outside a place. Blackada (by AH Black —Armada) was well represented at the Wanganui meeting, for her progeny raced very' prominently. Piuthair won the Cup, in which Clarinda was t-iird and Novar fourth. The last-named scored in the Earle Stakes on the second day. All were bred by Mr. K. A. McKenzie in whose interest Piuthair and Clarinda raced. Xovar i«= owned by Mr. D. Munro. Reremoana created a surprise by winning the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui on Satin day for he was the outsider of the field. It appears that the reason for his neglect on the machine was his poor showing in the Taranaki Stakes on the previous Saturduy. In the Jackson Stakes he v. always handy, and coming round the outs"" , ? of the lieid took charge in the straight to beat Lysander by a neck. T. Green had a very profitable trip to Riccarton on Saturday. The Awapuni apprentice scored on K. J. Mason's trio, Agrion, Haze, and Shalimar, and finished second on F. D. Jones' pair, Battlement and Young Lochinvar. He rode in only five of the eight races fbr three firsts and two seconds F. A. Jones rode Footfall in the Midsummer Handicap and not T. Green, as sent out in some messages. The public did not start too well'at Wangan- i on Saturday for three good priced onte came home in succession. However, matters then turned their way for three first favourites (Ardath, Damaris and Novar) scored in succession. In t ie next race, Whenuanui, the eecond favourite, and King's Folly, the first favourite, finished ae named. The public fancy in the laet event was Shirley, and she duly landed the chief portion of the stake. Damaris, the relative to Lysander and Motley, showed on the first day of the Wanganui Jieeting that she would be on the winning lir t before long. She finished a good third in the Juvenile Handicap, and on Saturday, after being slow to move iu the Harrison Two-year-old Handicap, <vor nicety. She i≤ a wellgrown youngster, and is very like Lysander in appearance. Damaris can be looked to win further races, especially next season. The outside of the course proper was open at Ellerslie this morning for fast work. Salamander ran seven furlongs itf 1.37 3-5 from a standing start. King Emerald covered, the last four furlongs ! of his work in 52 3-ss, and Archeno ran half a-mile in 51 2-ss. Merry Damon and Whita Bird were together at the finish of five furlongs in 1.6 l-5l Judge's Box and Master Mind ran half a-mile in 50s, Master Noel, Passionate and a companion went five furlongs in 1.8 1-5, and Pentagram was slightly in front of Archibald at the finish of seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. Respirator and Auriculous covered half a-mile in 535, and Charlady was just ahead of Haerera over | six furlongs in 1 19s. Town Bank beat Creation at the end of half a-mile in 525. Right and Left, and Killute went six furlongs in 1,24 1-5. Golden Wedding covered four furlongs in 50s. • MEETING IN WHANGAREI. The Waipapakauri and. Whangarei Racing Clubs' meetings will held at Kensington Park, Whangarei, on March 31 and April 2, and excellent programmes have been arranged for these fixtures, which will be conducted by the Whangarei Racing Club. The Waipapakauri meeting will take place first and £1390 is being distributed in stake money in the eight events which comprise the programme. The qhief event is the Waipapakauri Cup, one mile and three furlongs, for which the stake is SOOsovs and a cup value 40gns. The take money in the aggregate is equal > what the Waipapakauri Club is Bering. With such fine programmes c tie clubs should not lack for support. t V'hangarei is a very popular racing ■jntre for Auckland racing men, and it c i to be hoped that they will accord t he support to these meetings that they ave , done in the past. Owners and ( rainers can rest assured that there will e a specal train for the conveyance of orses from Ellerslie to Whangarei, and s hat as far as accommodation is con- j erned they will be well looked after on , rrival.
