CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. MIDSUMMER MEETING. FOOTFALL WECS BIG HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHEISTCHUECH, Saturday. Tie midsummer meeting of the Can-. terbury Jockey Club was held to-day at Riccarton. in tine weather. There was an average attendance and the fast state of the track was responsible for interesting racing. The Hornby Handicap. Waterlow led for two furlongs when Saxette went to the front, with Tiff and Waterlow next. 'At the six furlong post Jolly Glad was in charge from Saxette. With one furlong to go, Jolly Glad was three lengths ahead from Tiff and Sayonara. Racing into the straight, Jolly Glad had Tin; in close attendance and Waterlow was handy. Sayonara joined up at the distance, but Jolly Glad held his place and beat Sayonara by a neck. Waterlow being half a length away and Tiff two lengths back. The Trial Stakes. Atom and Miss Flighty led Gourmet for the first two furlongs. Princess llafalda had taken charge when the five furlong post was reached, with the Atom and Crossboy next in order. Haze closed up on reaching the straight and joined Gourmet in the lead, with Calcite, Princess Mafa'da and Sir Roy next in attendance. Haze drew out to win easily by a length and a-half from Sir Roy and Calcite was two lengths farther back, Princess Mafalda heading the following bunch. Middle Park Plate. Autobiography was first to show out, followed by Ark Royal and Paperchase. They raced like this jntil the course proper was reached, when Agrion moved rip. He took charge at - the distance and went on to win easily by three lengths from Royal Tractor. Green Cloth was two lengths behind and Ark Royal in fourth place. Midsummer Handicap. Margaret Prince and Gay Queen showed the way for two furlongs, with Footfall next and Front Rank in the rear. At the mile post, Gay Queen was in front of Footfall, with Assurance and Margaret Birney lying handy. Passing the six furlong post, Gay Queen had Assurance as her nearest attendant, while Footfall and Margaret Birney were a length back. Assurance joined Gay Queen in the lead, while Front Rank started to move up from the back. The field closed in on reaching the straight, but Footfall went on to win by two lengths. Battlement beat Front Rank by a head for second place and Margaret Birney was just a neck away in front of the others. Lyttelton Plate. The colours of Reckless, Shalimar, Solgele and Money Mart were prominent in the early stages. Reckless was showing the way to Shalimar when the course proper was reached, but over the last furlong, Shalimar wore "Reckless down and won by a neck. Broadmoor was three lengths away third, with Bolero three lengths away, followed by Money Mart, Arikiwai and Scoff. * Craven Plate. Finora jumped out in front, followed by Xine of Spades and Nincompoop. At the end of three furlongs Finora had Nine of Spades, Young Lochinvar, and Nincompoop as her nearest attendants. Finora led into the straight,- but Nincompoop took charge at the distance post and won by just over two lengths from Young Lochinvar, with Finora a head away third. Countersign *"as a length further back. Halawell Handicap. In the HalsweH Handicap Gold Mint was a hot favourite. Happy Queen, Precious, Serotina, and Gold Mint comprised the first division from the start and to the course proper. Precious and Gold Mint then went .on from Serotina, but at the distance Precious was beaten. Gold Mint taking charge with Serotina close by. Serotina headed Gold Mint 100 yards from the post, and won by a head, Master Clarence finishing strongly in third place, with Precious fourth. Post Handicap. Will Oakland led into the straight Thorndale and Ophir took charge at the distance, and Ophir won by a neck. Brightling being two lengths away, with Alyson fourth.
