Johnston 5. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Edwards, who won the pairs four years ago at Auckland, and Kilgour, the first winner of the singles under the auspices of the association—that was in 1914 — and Harraway, the skipper of the Dunedin team rink, were among those unbeaten at the "end of the first dav. Allatt, the Melbourne player, looks like being the real hope of the Australian contingent. He played a wonderfully consistent and well-judged game yesterday, going through without a loss into the fifth round. Swain had a setback after a successful first round, and Dunham and Booth both went under in the first and second rounds. Some interesting games were played on the Carlton Club greens. That between Maher and Scrivener (Wanganui) in the first round was particularly keen. At the eighth head, Maher was 13—-1, but the visitor put up a great fight from this point and was only one point behind at the nineteenth head, the scores being 16—15. The West End player then ran out to win 18—15. Tanner and Haldane (the Wellington bowler) had an exciting tussle on the same green before the former ran out the winner of the first-round match by 19 —17. Haldane was five up at the end of five heads, but before he could score again the Epsom player in five heads scored nine. The Wellington player replied with ten points in six heads, the result of good drawing, making the score 15—9 in his favour, but Tanner made another strong rally. In the' fourth-round game at Carlton between the two lives, Maher beat Hollows handsomely by beautiful drawing by 23—6. Hollows showed little of his previous good form.

At Ellerslie in the first round, Kilgour and Bentley tied on the last head at 15 all. On the extra head being played Bentley lay two, but Kilgour -with a fine drive scattered the head and lay shot. Many of the greens were very keen and in consequence those who were slow in getting the "feel" of it fared so badly in the first ten heads or so in the first round that good play afterwards failed in many cases to pull the game round in their favour. The sensations of the first day's play were the defeats in ttye first rounds of the ex-champaons, Ingram and Best, and perhaps the greatest of all was the I thrashing that Maxwell Walker, the champion, received in the second round from Mclntyre, the Hamilton player. Kerr's defeat by Scantlebury Was not altogether surprising, for the runner-up in the recent Christmas tournament was in good form. Clever Work at Carlton. Keen contests took place among the two-lifers at the Carlton, greens. CParticular interest was taken in the Kilgour v. Bell (sen.), the Harrawav v. Russell, and the Edwards v. Clark "matches. Kilgour, Russell and Clark, kept on their winning ways-. Kilgour and Bell played remarkably good bowls, and nearly all the heads were splendid, heads being continually altering. Both drove well, but Kilgow was the first to get the "feel" of the green, and this gave him a bit of a start. Edwards went down to Clark in a great fight. He was one up on the Rocky Nook man on the last head, and the latter wanted two to win. Clark played a splendid shot to split two balls and stop on the jack with his own for two. In one head Clark drew four, and four inches would have covered all. Russell beat Harrawav 25—12 on the 17th head. The Dunedin bowler was unfortunate with his drives, generally leaving his opponent- lying three or four on the head. Good drawing by both men was a feature of the Parsons—Bell (jun.) match, and once the latter drew a four, and again a three. Parsons, however, was the more consistent and won by five up on the 20th head. Mclntyre's drawing was simply superb in his match against his colleague from Hamilton, and he went right away to win. At one time the score was 20—3. Allatt, the Australian hope, played a fairly consistent game; but Maher was about at his best, and, drawing the better, won. Hollows got in first against Crawshaw, j his fellow one-lifer at Carlton, and kept on doing so. His consistent drawing was too much for the St. Heliers player, who never scored a point while Hollows was going from B—s8 —5 to 17—-5. Nothing outstanding occurred in the match between the other one-lifers on the same green, Senior and Crowley. The match was somewhat of an easy give-and-take order, without any particularly striking head being put up or shot made.
