ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

G.\\ .D.—Thespian beat Gloaming by two lengths. Breezy, the half-sister to Stormy, was on the track this morning and seems tc be a nice mover. She has yet to race A. Cox. who trains Rahepoto. Antrim ! Boy and others intends to shift his team ! to Whangarci shortly. There was not much of interest at Ellerslie this morning. Among those noticed doing useful work were Stormy Town Bank and Ballymoy. Stormy may be taken to Wellington for the meeting there next week. Ballymoy also has engagements at the same fixture. .Maurice McCarten, the New Zealand ; jockey, enjoyed a great run of success I during the Perth Cnp carnival. Although I he was beaten in the Perth Cup on the I favourite. Spearage, he won three races [ on the second day of the meeting, one | being Tich, who won the All-aged Stakes. McCarten also rode Carus, who was at long odds, into second place in the Derby. Pilliewinkie is to resume work at Flemington this week. The gelding has I had a spell since the spring and is evidently to be prepared for the autumn I campaign. Last autumn Pilliewinkie won I the Australian Cup, in which race his ; superior stamina carried him thnragjj, j -Just before the Melbourne C'up -ias't | November.. sPilliewinkie- went wrvog, ftjfil ; had to be withdrawn from | During the Caulfield Cup meeting be ; raced in the Herbert Power Stakes and j injured himself in some way. Since then very little has been heard of the j gelding. | Since his return from Bendigo Mauj fred has not been asked to do a great | deal on the tracks (says a Melbourne writer). He is mostly being confined •, to easy pacing, but it will soon be time | for him to bestir himself again. Man- | fred looks strong and healthy, and goes about his task very kindly. While he I was at Bendigo. there was no sign of a I return of the leg trouble which inter- ] fered with his spring prospects, and now there is every reason to believe that he will stand another sound preparation, but. of course, this point cannot be determined until he is much further advanced in his work for the autumn campaign. Manfred is a horse that cannot very well be '"nursed." It takes a good deal of solid galloping, and a race or two before be is thoroughly fit. and thus he must have a good set of legs to go through. Manfred seems to be still developing in frame. By the time he has filled right out, he would be able to go into any show ring with the certainty of holding his own. In the meantime, he has business on the racecourse, and it may be predicted that he will be found attending to it in his usual thorough manner. After his work Manfred may sometimes walk a little tenderly for a few strides, but he soon straightens up, and little notice need be taken of it. The Telegraph Handicap has attracted a good field. Reremoana is a tine sprinter, and with 9.12 has not been handicapped out of it, for a; Palmerston recentlv he demonstrated that he still retained his form, when he won the Stakes, beating Glentruin. The Hawk showed a return to form when he annexed the Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie with 0.4. He has now 9.11. Grand Knight was not impressive at Auckland, while Royal Damon is a good sprinter, and has" been racing most consistently. He is not at all badly placed with 8.7. Lady Cavendish disappointed at Auckland, while Orchid has a fair turn of speed. Civility has been doing better over longer courses recently. Comic Song has two C.J.C. Stewards' Handicaps to his credit, and Mimetic appears to be improving. High Pitch won the Railway Handicap at Auckland in good style with 7.2-1, and has now Bst. Shirley has plenty of pace, but went amiss at Auckland, and did not start. Father O'Flynn won at Waipukurau, and at Hastings, during the holidays, over six furlongs. Cawnpore annexed the Telegraph Handicap last year. He was sent to Australia this season, but could only run into a place on two occasions. Since his return he has not got on the winning list. White Fang has plenty of pace, but he is racing in Australia. If brought back for this event he will have some support. Deluge and Licinius are a most likely pair, particularly the latter, who generally races well at Trentham. Booster is a well-performed sprinter, and at the recent Dunedin meeting won the Fede ral Handicap, the chief sprint event of the day. with 8.4. He has now 7.7. Paper Chase, who is on the same mark, showed ability at Auckland, while Ballymoy was second in the Electric Handicap at Auckland. Oration, who showed a return to winning form at Stratford during the holidavs. tr.av prove tie best of the others. Rsrc-noaia, The Hawk. Royal Damon, High Pitch, Licinius, Booster, and Ballymoy may have most friends at present. " I

i it. did not tike Frank Dempsey long to ""break the ice" alter his return from England isays an Australian writer!. In liis second mount in public he won the Standish Handicap on Quintus on New • Year's Day at Flemington. Kiding styles England and Australia are \astly dif:cnt. and perhaps Dempsey on his previc - return trip cu: here found it somewhat ..iticult to adapt himself to the changed i order. Not so this time. He (juickly ! got into his stride, and he narrowly missed winning the big double—Standish and Bagot—his mount, Eridanus, in the lcng race, being narrowly defeated by Long-worthy. Dempsey is able to ride as light as ever.
