RABBI RESIGNS.
SYNAGOGUE SCENES. SACRED SCROLL JEOPARDISED LOXDO2ST, December 17. Riotous scenes, which culminated in the resignation of Rabbi Hirsch, occurred at Bournemouth synagogue last Saturday. The Rabbi asserted that Judaism was bankrupt in Bournemouth, the wholesale sabbath-breaking setting a bad example to the younger generation. This statement incensed a section of the congregation, which rushed the pulpit, tried to eject Rabbi Hirsch, and snatch the Sacred Scroll. Threats to call in the police finally restored order. Probably the most sacrilegious act that could be perpetrated in a synagogue is interference with the Sacred Scroll, from which sections of the law are read by the Rabbi and honoured members of the congregation. In its silk covering the Scroll, when not in active use, remains in the Ark, before which an everlasting light burns. On the Sabbath and on Jewish festival and fast days, the Scroll is removed while the worshippers stand, and specially selected members are called to the pulpit to read out portions of the ancient Hebraic law.
