N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. ■The thirty-sixth tourney to decide the chess championship of New Zealand, is scheduled to 'open on Boxing Day at 9.30 a.m. , '' . The competitors are as follows:—Auckland: J. A. Moir, A. W. O. Davies, C. C. Roberts, and J. Burr.v. Hamilton: H. Fen wick, and J. Bullock. Ohura-: W. H. S. Hughes. Wanganni: L. Pleasants. Masterton: Paul Hummer, Wellington: R. J. Barnes, A. W." Gyles, G. P. Anderson. I. j Fouhy, F. K. Kellinir, .and W. J. Fairnburn. Nelson : E.. H. Severne. Westport: Rev. A. Miller. Oamaru: vj. B. Dunlop. Dunedin :B. W. Spenhouse. Melbourne : J. A. Erskine." Mr. Burry is- .the only player who is making his first appearance. Messrs. Barnes, Davies. Dunlop and Kelling ' are ex-cham-pions of New Zealand, although it is some years since either Barnes or Davies has won. Mr. J. A. Erskine. the only entrant from Australia, made his first appearance in Dunedin a year ago. He was formerly a student at Canterbury College, where he; gained his M.A. degree with much distinction, and was awarded the 1851 Research Scholarship- in Experimental- Science. Mr. J. A. Moir, Auckland's chief hope, has been six times' champion of the local chess club, and has been prominent at previous New Zealand' chess congresses. . Mr. Severne, several time's "champion of ; Canterbury and also - of., the Nelson Chesa. Club, has also been prominent at previous.congresses. The same may be said of -Mr. Anderson, the present champion of.the-"Wellington Chess Club, while Messrs. L. Pleasants. H. Fenwick and B. W. Stenhouse are champions of. their respective clubs, and the Rev. A.
