CONCRETE MAIN ROAD.
FIRST MILE AT NORTHCOTE. £25,000 TO BE EXPENDED., A special meeting of the Nprthcote Borough Council was held last evening to receive tenders for the paving of Queen' Street from the wharf to the War Memorial, at the corner of Onewa and Lake Roads. A loan of £27,400 was authorised for this work, and for the formation of Belle Vue Avenue. The • latter road is to be dealt with separately. The work ■ proposed in Queen' Street provides for a width of eighteen feet of concrete in the centre of the road, with 'bitumen sides, kerbing and channelling; asphalt footpaths on both sides, as well as necessary storm water provision, and also laying down a new six-inch water main under the footpaths, from Alma Street, for the purpose of improving the water pressure. • ' The Mayor (Mr. C. A. Deuxberry) presided, and Councillors F. L. Maxwell, E. W. B. Herrick, A. R. Shutes, C. Bunker, A. J. Lennon, C. A. Clark, and A. W. Smith were also present. The estimate of the engineer (Mr. A. Greville Walker) was £23,737 1/4. Eight tenders were received, the lowest, that of J. J. Craig, Ltd., for £22,496 15/8, •being accepted subject to the engineer being, satisfied as to the schedule of prices submitted. In addition to the contract sum there are two other items to be included in the cost of the work—those of engineering fees and clerk of works (about £1405), and the sum df £1000 reserved for tarring is to be carried out 'by the council's workmen. This brings the total cost to approximately £24,900, and leaves a balance from the loan authorisation of aJbout £2500 for" Belle Vue Avenue, the cost of raising the loan, and other incidental expenses.
