BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting o£ the Birkeuhead Borough. Council was held last e-venirigv Mayor, Mr. J E'i/G. Skeates, presided, and Councillors Albert HadfieM, G. B. Hewson, Phil. H. Hayward, T. H. D. Boles, M. R. Sonster. L. R. ]~ Holler, and C. E. Campbell were also present. Automatic Telephone.—The Northcote Borough Council wrote, in response to a request from Birkenhead to collaborate in urging the Post and Telegraph Department to expedite the installation of the automatic telephone system, that the Xorthcote Business Association, which had undertaken the canvass, had been communicated with to ascertain results with the object of joining with Birkenhead in communicating with the Department. Island Bay Access. —Messrs. Stanton, Johnstone, and Spence advised that Mr. Justice Adams' judgment in the action brought by Mr. A. Cx. Jarrett, was in favour of the council. It was held that the proceeding)* of the council were in order, aud that Mr. Jarrett's application had been properly dealt with, and the decision properly arrived at. His Honor added that lie thought no other decision was possible on the Incts brought before the Court. Christmas Pictures. —Mr. .T. To<ld applied, for permission to show pictures at the Birkdale Hall on Christmas evening. This was granted, the programme to l>e submitted for approval. Street Lights.—The Xortheote Borough, Council intimated that the council was dispensing with gas for the street lamps, and I would not have the services of a lamplighter after that date. This necessitated the cancelling of the arrangement for the lighting of the Birkenhead lamp in Little Shoal Bay. Doljson Mine Disaster.—The council voted three guineas towards the fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Dobsou Coal Mine disaster, and agreed to receive subscriptions thereto at the council office. Bus Licenses.—The Acting "Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Dnwnie Stewart, acknowledged the council's representations regarding the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act, as applying to the Birki-.i-head Borough, and stated these and the. suggested amendments would have careful consideration. The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association requested approval of a proposal to form n transport committee, to ileal with all questions connected with motor bus and tramway transport until such time as a transport control board was set up. The Takapuuu Ratepayers and Residents' Association also urged the advisability of a transport bon r il for the North Shore, expressing tha opinion that this would bo the only satisfactory way of controlling the traffic OH that side of the harbour. It was decided to reply that the Birkenhead Council had already moved in the direction of applying for a North Shore transport board.
