: RUSH OF PAYMENTS. -jx SUM OF £158,27: i RECEIVED. :»*. The rush of payments of rates i: Auckland began tliis week. Out of a toUu collection of £401,644, the sum oE £185,279 had been ]>aid in to the city' treasury by last night, over £30,000 of this amount having been received during the present week. The Mayor (Mr. (J. Baiklon) sniil : to-day that the rate at v.hich payments ; were coining in compared very favour- : . ably with the position last year. Before closing down for Christmas, lie anticipated- that the amount collected would be £220,000, and before the ten per cent penalty was imposed, on January 15, up to 90 per cent of the total should be collected.
