THE FERTILISER INDUSTRY.
L'AiRY CO. INTERESTED. A REPORTED DEAL. •It is understood that negotiations are in progress by which the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Co. will take up the manufacture and sale of fertilisers The report is that the dairy company will .either purchase outright the works of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, at Otahuhu, or will secure the effective control of that establishment. „ To a "Star" representative, Air. w. Goodfellow, the managing director, txplained the position. He said the general manager of the company, Mr. H. H. Sterling, had been negotiating with local manufacturers for several months with the object of obtaining supplies for shareholders of the company at merchants terms. After consideration, the manufacturers had refused to comply with the cpmpanv's request, which had provided that, all rebates should go back to the faimers. , . , Mr. Goodfellow said .he himselt had recently visited Australia for the express purpose of inspecting fertiliser works in New South Wales and Victoria. The result of the visit had been entirely satisfactory and alternative schemes to erect new works or to take over existing -works had been considered by the-directors. Certain details had yet to be finalisedand he hoped to be aole to make a further statement regarding the company's intentions early next year. Questioned as to the part being taken in this reported deal by his firm, the local manager of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co. said he could give no information. Mr. J. Wilson, manager of the New Zealand Fanners' Fertiliser Co., has stated that his company is not a party to any such negotiations.
