CANON J. C. ECCLES.
At the age of 86 years Canon John Charles Eccles died in Auckland yesterday. Born in Ireland, Canon Eccles arrived in New Zealand while quite a young man, and he was a student at St. John's College, Tamaki. He was ordained a deacon in 1874, and priest in 1877. The same year he was appointed vicar at Waipawa, which was then a scat*tered settlement. The vicar's charge extended as far south as Manawatu Gorge. In 1892 he was vicar of Woodville, and was one of the first canons of the Waiapu Diocese. He did good work organising the home mission fund in that district. In 1919 he retired, and came to Auckland to reside. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
