Ex-Sergeant Dobson, of North Sydney, who retired recently from the police force, tells a good story of a Chinese picnic at Clifton Gardens. Sis larrikins had been annoy-ing the Chinese. Sergeant Dobson and a constable accompanied the youths to the wharf and advised them to leave the picnic ground. While waiting for the boat a Chinese rushed up to the policemen and told them that there had been a fight near the pavilion. "One man nearly killed— I think him die," said the excited Chinese. The police left the youths on the wharf and went to the pavilion, but did not find any signs of a disturbance. When they returned to the wharf in half an hour they told their informant that they had not been able to locate the injured man. "Oh, that all right," said the Chinese, "there no fighting. While you away twenty Chinamen give the larrikins good hiding. They gone to Sydney. They no come back.
