GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
DEVIATION TROUBLES. BRIDGE COLLAPSES. Difficulties continue to arise in connection with the reconstruction of the Great South Road, south of Otahuhu. Late on Thursday afternoon the approaches of a bridge on the deviation route at Wiri collapsed, causing a temporary blockage of trallic. This bridge was built nearly twenty years ago with the intention of carrying a maximum load of about three tons. Little wonder that it could not cater for the heavily-loaded lorries which are a feature of modern road traffic! The only way out of the difficulty was to allow the public to use a somewhat tortuous track on the Great South Road, where formation work is in progress, and the Manukau County Council kept a man employed the whole of Thursday night pointing out the various cuttings and fillings which had to be avoided. On Friday morning this portion of the road was again closed, and traffic is now compelled to proceed by a deviation route right to the Wiri railway station, thence via Mr. E. A. Price's "Cambria Park" Estate, on to the Puhunui Road at Papatoetoe. This journey entails a detour of about three or four miles, but is a convenient route for traffic proceeding to or from the city, via Mangcre.
