OVERHEAD CROSSINGS.
IMPROVEMENTS WHANKJAREI. (Ry Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAXGAREI, Friday. Two main girders of the railway embankment spanning Water Street, are being lifted into position to-day by the department's special crane. Two smaller footpath girders were lifted yesterday and two more on the north side ate ready for putting in .position. With the completion of this (.Tossing, speedy progress will be mnde with the embankment project, which will do away witli the level crossing menace in the business area of Whangarei. Walton Street was completed some weeks ago and concrete pillars are being erected in Rust Lane, which, when finished and spanned, will mark big headway in this undertaking. Meanwhile, the facing of the embankment is employing a body of men lifting huge girders into place. The work is attracting considerable public interest.
