NOTES FROM CANTERBURY.
(By Telsgraph.—Suecial to "Star.") • CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Limerick was Mistered before he lef» Australia on the return trip to New Zealand, and since his arrival at Riccarton has had a dose of physic. He will now have a g-ood spell to allow the Injured foot to grow down and completely heaL This means he cannot be at his best for the Great Northern Derby on New Year's Day, and it can be taken as pretty certain no attempt will be made to race him seriously until the autumn. Then, ir all Is well with him, he may pay another visit to Australia where he has St. Leger engagements at Flemington and Randwrck. Everythingwill depend, however, on how the Injured Toot progresses during- the next montb or SO. In F. D. Jones' opinion, Australia hai some high class performers such a Rampion, Manfred, Heroic and Co., hut al far the next grade or horses is concerned he considers they are below the New Zealand standard. One or the best two-year-olds in Australia, if not the best, was Royal Feast, who won the Marliyrnong Plate at the V.R.c. spring meeting, with M. McOarten in the saddle. He is an exceptionally well grown colt, and, to Jones' idea, looks one of the most HKeiy Derby candidates seen out at Randwickand Flemington. This year's dual Derby winner, Rampion, was successful In the .O.C. Breeders' Plate twelve months ago, and it is stated that immediately arter hi' victory one Melbourne backer supported him Tor the V.R.C. Derby. He had twelve months' wait to win his irag>er, but duly collected, and i? now prepared to take a similar risk with regard to Hoyal Feast. Young Lochinvar, who displayed symptoms of soreness prior to the >'ew Zealand Cup meeting, has been sent to his owner's property for a spell.
