NEW NORTH ROAD.

RECONSTRUCTION SCHEME.

COMMISSION

PROPOSAL

ABANDONED.

The Mount Albert Uorough Council decided last evening, as the outcome of legal advice, not to take further action in regard to making application to the Government for a commission in connection with the reconstruction of the newNorth Road, and it was resolved to invite tenders for the work at the earliest possible date.

The Mayor said that the borough's solicitor had pointed out that when s tally was previously taken some -ears ago by the Highways Board, it* was found that four-fifths of the traffic from Avondale came via the New North Road, and one-fifth via the Great Xorth Road.' It was then felt that the council would be justfied in asking that the cost of the work should be allocated. Recently another tally had been taken, and it was found that two-fifths of the traffic came Mount Albert way, and that three-fifths went the other way. Out oof the twofifths a lot of it was purely Mount Albert traffic, and therefore it would be no use asking for a commission. Onehunga, had to bear the cost of the Mangere traffic, and Otahuhu the cost of the Great South Road traffic.

It was stated that the plans for the reconstruction of the Xew North Road would be ready for the next meeting of the council, the distance being two miles from Kingsland to the tram terminus, and an additional mile from that point to the boundary of aie borough.
