A British wireless message states that General Sun Chuan-fang is holding a special steamer in readiness for flight from Kiu-kiang, where the Reds, who have received reinforcements from Hankow, are attacking strongly.
The Chekiang province's alliance with the Reds is definitely confirmed.
The Paris newspaper "Le Journal" says that the French Government has formally protested to Peking against the firing by Chinese troops on the French gunboat Alerte at Kiu-kiang on October 13. BLOW AT BRITISH TRADE. IMPROVING CANTON HARBOUR. (Received 11.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, October 21. A blow at British trade in the Far East is contemplated by the CantonGovernment.
According to an official statement to-day, it announces its determination to improve Canton harbour's shipping conditions for the purpose of making transhipment of cargo at Hongkong unnecessary.
It declares that the calling off of the boycott must not be interpreted to mean a lessening -of tne Nationalist movement, which will be broadened to include all the territories controlled by the Cantonese.
Demonstrators boarded a British ship at Ningpo and forced all foreigners to disembark. Later they demonstrated outside the British Consulate and burned a British store.
A message from Hankow dated last week states that further developments are likely to wait for Feng Yu-hsiang's progress towards Sine'ai.
There is nothing to indicate whether Wu Pei-fu is able to obtain a force with which €o attempt to retrieve his defeat.
