FIRE PREMIUMS.

POSITION AT HAMILTON.

OFFER BY UNDBRWRITBRS.

(By Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.)

HAMIDTOST, this day.

Having.':.for. years been endeavouring to obtain reduction. in fire premiums, the Hamilton „ Borough Council has received an offer from the Underwriters' Aseciation to reduce premiums from 10 per cent to 15 per.cent, but subject to a large number of conditions. Councillor/* 8 , /? Luxford, secretary to" the Fire Board, said the position regarding fires and the premium's paid during the past ;*teeYen; or .eight years .in Hamilton was well worthy of investigation. The losses had been infinisteeimal compared with the sum paid in premiums, this being largely due to the money spent by the Fire Board. In not a "single instance could the Underwriters' Association say. thit loss had been sustained owing to insufficient water pressure, and the brigade was efficiently equipped. The speaker considered that the letter should be ignored. There would be a saving of £2000 on premiums, but it might cost the borough £100,000 to comply with the Underwriters' demands.

The matter was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
