ROSKILL FIRE BOARD.

PROPOSED LOAN OF £4900. FIRE STATION AT THREE KINGS. An important meeting of the Mount Roskill Fire Board was held last night in the Road Board's office, Mount Albert Road. Mr. T. S. Lamont presided. The Road Board was represented by the chairman and Messrs. J. J. Preston and L. A. Tozer, and the Underwriters' Association by Messrs. Brialey, Kemble and Forbes. Mr. W. J. Leahy represented the- Government.

The committee which had been set up to consider ways and means, and to select a site for the new fire brigade station, recommended a capital expenditure of £4900, made up as follows:— Purchase of land, £500; erection of buildings, £3000; fire tender, £1000; and equipment, £400.

The chairman explained that the committee had alldwed £500 for the purchase of a part of the public reserve at the corner of Mount Albert Road and Three Kings Road, on which to erect the new fire brigade station, provided the Road Board has power to sell, seeing that the reserve is vested in the ratepayers and inhabitants of Mount Roskill. If this site cannot be purchased, the Fire Board will have to look for another one elsewhere.

The board adopted the committee's recommendation, and will submit the proposed expenditure to the Minister of Internal Affairs for his approval to issue debentures for the amount at six per cent interest.

The meeting also fixed the salaries of the officers and members of the fire brigade and others, with the expenditure on the purchase of equipment, etc., the total to cost £1100, and' called revenue expenditure. The revenue,:, will be contributed by the Mount Roskill Road Board, and the Underwriters' Association, who will pay £512 each, and the Government will contribute £75. This sum does not allow for a duplex fire alarm system. It is the intention of the Fire Board not to go in for this at present, as it would be too expensive for a scattered district like Mount Roskill. As it is the new fire-brigade is going to cost the district over,. £10 a week. ' t: _

The Fire Board will install two syrens, one at the new fire brigade station and one at a place to be appointed. The meeting endorsed the chairman's action in ordering the rfecessary equipment for the firemen.

Captain C. Gilbert, superintendent of the Onehunga Fire Brigade, is to be asked to act as advisory superintendent to the Mount Roskill Fire Brigade until March 31 next.
