HULK FOR A BREAKWATER.
USE FOR THE G. M. TUCKER.
TO BE BEACHED AT'WAIARO,
• The. JDevonport Ferry Company's old ; coal hulk Genevie M. Tucker, which is to be replaced by the Columbia, will not 'be towed to Brown's Island and set on .fire, a fate that hae befallen a number of other hulks. Instead, she will serve a more useful purpose. She is to be' towed to Waiaro Beach, where she will be moored ashore to act as a breakwater.
Built at Portland, Maine. 56 years ago, the Genevie was engaged for some years in the trans-Pacific timber trade. Early in the present century she was purchased by the Westport Coal Company, who dismantled her for a coal hulk. Some eight years ago she again changed hands, being- .sold to the Devonport Ferry Company.
The hulk's new owners are Messrs. R. and jy. Hadden, shingle contractors. Tomorrow the old vessel will T*» towed by launch from Auckland to Waiaro Beach, »■ shingle'beach about four miles north of Cabbage Bay. At the present time there is no breakwater; of any kind at Waiaro, and it is thought that the hulk will be of considerable vdlue in the working of the shingle.
