BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough; Council was held last evening. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. Albert Hadfield, presided..

Condolence,-—The chairman .referred to the loss the Dominion bad sustained in the deaths of Sir James Carroll *nd Sir Arthur Myers. Appreciation was recorded. ot the services rendered by both these gentlemen, and sincere sympathy was expressed with their families In their bereavement. It was decided *6 forward a letter conveying tho council's slncerest sympathy" with Mr. Swindall and family In the death Ot Mr. David M. Swindail.

'•' Civic ' Reserve.-—The engineer Intimated that sufficient scoria rock had been received ffoin the Devonport quarry for the completion of work in the civic reserve in connection with the band' rotunda and war memorial. The erection of the war memorial would be started In a few days, and the contractor had undertaken to complete by November'il.,

Motor . Trafnc-—The present location of the "silent policeman." at Highbury Corner, was adopted as the permanent position.

Water Reticulation.—The whole question of water reticulation was referred to the engineer aiid waterworks engineer for a comprehensive report. particularly in respect to Birkdale and the lower portion of Birkenhead. An extension of a twoinch pipe for a length of 15 chains was authorised in Victoria Road East.

New Buildings.-—Five permits for new buildingH were granted.

Jetty.—A communication from the Auckland Harbour Board slated that as the council had the solo right of the use of the outer eastern jetty at Birkenhead, and a 8 Its plant had not yet been removed, the board could not agree to any rebate of rental. Upon the council making good the approach to the jetty the board would release It from any further payment of rental. The work was authorised.

Beach Haven Drnlnage.—On behalf of Beach Haven ratepayers, Mr. S. Cain wrote pointing out (hat there are only 2(5 families permanently living at Beach Haven : also that the sections generally are. a-quarter aero, and not one-eighth of an acre, as suggested hy the Health Officer. I'nder these circumstances the ratepayers at a public meeting were of the opinion that the lime was not opportune for a drainage system at Beach Haven.

Bathing Sheds. —Mr. Kouster referred to the desirability of establishing bathing sheds at the 'Needle's Eye Beach, at the end of Arawa Street. . The chairman said the council had agreed to subsidise donations t6wards this objective last year.

Greater-Auckland Conference.—All the members agreed 'to attend the conference on November 4 of Auckland local bodies, at the Invitation of the City Council.

Gas Regulations.—The Department of Industries ahd Commerce asked for detailed" information in regard Io complaints by Birkenhead residents in respect "to the. gas service. The chairman said the quality Of the gas and attention by the company's maintenance department had been much better during the past few months. The complaints previously had been of a general character.

Refuse Destructor. —The scheme for a combined rubbish disposal service and deßtructor. for • the four North Shore, boroughs was adopted.

Electricity.—lt was ;agreed to hold a function at Birkenhead to commemorate the advent of electricity, which.is expected early in December, subsequent to the swltching-on ceremony by tho Minister of Public Works at the main sub-station in Lake Road, Takapuna.
