RELATIVE NAVAL STRENGTHS. The following is declared, in an announcement made by the United States Navy Department on August 2, 1926, to be the present strength ratio of the Treaty Navies in craft not limited by the Washington Arms Pact: Light cruisers: United States, 1.56; Great Britain, 5.00; Japan, 2.57; France, I 1.15; Italy, 0.83. Destroyers: United i States, 6.88; Great Britain, 5.00; Japan, 2.18; France, 1.25; Italy, 1.24. Fleet submarines: United States, 3.72; Great' Britain, 5.00; Japan, 6.9 C; France, 1.43; Italy, 1.24. Submarines: United States, 8.64; Great Britain, 5 00; Japan, 7.20; France, 5.18; . Italy, 2.81. Aircraft ("plane carriers):. United States, 2.69; Great Britain, 5.00: Japan, 2.46; France, 1.19; Italy, .67. The. Navy personnel of the United States, it was also declared in the announcement, is below the ratios of Great Britain and Japan, it being necessary for that country to add 534 officers and 14,200 men to her fleet; before equalling the British Navy. The tonnage of the capital ships retained by the American Navy now totals 525,850, which is to be cut down to . a total of 525,000 tons by 1941, in accordance with the terms of the Washington Arms Treaty. At present, the Department's announcement said, •the tonnage of British capital ships is 580,450, which 5s also to be cut down to 525,000 in 1941. , The tonnage of rAhierieaiv , airplane* carriers was given'in the announcement as 78,700, compared with the British total of 104,490.
