OPEN GOLF TITLE.

MOSS AND SHAW DEAD HEAT. ROSS A STROKE BEHIND. AUSTRALIANS IN THE RUCK. ißy Telezrnph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. The elements were not so kind and favourable for the second day's play of the open golf championship of New Zealand. Instead of a light southerly there was a strong northerly all day, and the altered conditions affected many of the players, especially visitors, who in practice games have only experienced wind from the south. The effect of the wind, combined with the drying of the course and greens, and the timidity of many of the amateurs in their anxiety to qualify for the amateur championship, was responsible for many "crashes." There was a large gathering of spectators, especially in the afternoon. The third and fourth rounds of the open championship were played, but the winner is not yet known, as the result was a tie between two professionals, E. J. Moss, of Auckland, and A. J. Shaw, of Wellington, with an total aggregate of 307, or one less than the winner's total last year. The play-off should provide an excellent exhibition of 18 holes of stroke play, as both men are at the top of their form. Dr. Ross, who led by three strokes in the first day's play, maintained a lead on the field at the end of the third round, but Shaw, Moss and Horton individually gained on him, and the situation became very interesting. The Leader Strikes Trouble. In the fourth round Ross reeled off the first half in a faultless 35, but at the eleventh he struck trouble, incurring a penalty stroke, and from this on he appeared in trouble, and was obviously playing too carefully. He missed three comparatively easy putts. He could only come home in 4."), making SO for the round. Moss was in shortly after, and a 70 placed him in the lead by one stroke. All eyes were now centred on Horton, ■wTio required a 70 to put him in the lead, but 80 was the best he could do. The only man left to dispute the issue was Shaw, and when he teed o:r nt tho seventeenth he was 2 over fours, and only required a 6 and a 5 to win. A four ■was on at the seventeenth, but, putt ing boldly, he over-ran the hole, ana took 6. Even then 5 at the eighteenth would have given him the championship, and when he played his second it looked all over. He was 80 yards or so from the green, but he only went halfway with his approach, making him four to the green and two putts to complete a 78. This made him equal with Moss.

D. C. Collins, scr, and W. P. McCarthy and E. H. Liddle did not return cards for the fourth round. O'Rorke Vase Match. Ten teams entered for the O'Rorke Vase. Miramar No. 1 team, 321, proved the winners, and then came Napier 322, Hutt 329, Wellington No. 1 331, Wanganui 333. Australia 335, Eltham 335, and Christchurch 337. A. D. S. Duncan played very steady golf, and will be heard of in the amateui contest. E. M. Macfarlane, last year's winner, could only finish in 18th place with 321, or 13 strokes worse than last year. The conditions yesterday were not to his likii:g, but he should lie dangerous in the amateur championship. J. C. Bidwill and A. I). Morris tied for HI 33nd place in the qualifying rounds of B the amateur championship. In the play- ■> off, Bidwill won toy.one stroke. A play-off

between G. B. Forrest and T. Galloway for eighth place in the professional championship resulted in Galloway winning. In the amateur championship are 30 of Xew Zealand's best players. A pleasant feature is the qualifying of two Australian visitors. Dr. Sidney Jones and Hector Morrison. The latter has not yet struck form, but has shown indications that he possesses '"the goods." A feature of the open championship was- the fact that out of 80 competitors, 77 completed cards were returned. D. C. Collins, owing to indisposition, scratched, and W. P. McCarthy and E. H. Liddle did not complete the fourth round. Dr. Ross wins the Jellicoe Cup for the best round in the open championship—a popular win. The open championship tie between E. J. Moss and A. J. Shaw will be played oIT on Thursday morning. Draw For Other Open Events. The tournament will be continued tomorrow, when the first rounds of the amateur and professional championships will be played. The weather is line, but a strong wind is blowing. The draw for the amateur championship is as follows: K. Ross plays J. C. Bidwill, X. Bell plays A. E. Conway, M. H. Duncan plays D. 0. "Whyte, L.
